PRESS RELEASE 18/04/01

The new Board of Trustees, appointed by the Charity Commission last year, is currently negotiating a management restructuring and a fundamental re-financing of the East Somerset Railway.    During this period of negotiation, it is regrettably necessary for the Railway to be closed on a temporary basis. It is hoped to resume operations in the very near future and this will be publicized shortly.

MANAGEMENT CHANGE AT CRANMORE

The recently-appointed Board of Trustees of the East Somerset Railway has taken the decision to reorganize the management structure of the line in order to make more extensive use of volunteers. As a result of these changes, it is with regret that the Board has decided that it is necessary to abolish the two full-time positions of General Manager and Financial Manager, positions which have been held for several years by Mr. Peter Chandler and Mrs. Mandy Reynolds respectively. The Trustees wish to record their profound gratitude to Pete and Mandy for all their efforts over the recent years.

STEVE MASTERS APPOINTED LOCOMOTIVE SUPERINTENDENT

Steve Masters has been appointed to the position of Locomotive Superintendent at the East Somerset Railway. Steve, 21 also passed his driving exam last year making him one of the youngest steam train drivers in Britain. He joined the railway in 1992 at the age of 12 working in the loco shed and workshops where initially his small size was a great asset since he was able to get into corners of tanks and through small fireholes with ease. As a result of the many hours he has put in at the Railway, Steve has gained considerable experience in the maintenance and overhaul of locomotives. Recently he has guided ex-GWR dock tank 705 through its 10 year overhaul and has successfully ensured GWR 5637, mainstay of the ESR fleet, has been kept in good running order. He is also supervising the ongoing overhaul of E1 0-6-0 110. His hard work, technical knowledge and organisational skills have won him the respect of his colleagues and he has been duly rewarded with promotion to the Loco Superintendent's role. Currently Steve is studying Mechanical Engineering at Exeter University. In his spare time he is also paints - the subject is always a railway theme - continuing the tradition of railway artists at Cranmore. He has also just become the proud owner of an MG Midget - as if he had the time for another hobby!
